The historic official visit of His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, former Governor of Niger State and Senator representing Zone C in the Red Chamber, to the Niger State Government House represents a defining moment in the political history of the state. It is the first time a former governor has paid such an official visit, clearly demonstrating unity, political maturity, and continuity in leadership. This rare gesture reflects the cordial and respectful relationship between the former governor and the present administration under Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago.
One striking aspect of this visit was that His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Abubakar Sani Bello moved with many members of his former cabinet and political appointees even after the expiration of his tenure. The continued bond, loyalty, and solidarity among them is a clear sign of a harmonious working relationship built on trust, inclusion, and mutual respect. Leaders who govern with fairness and empathy naturally retain the support of those who serve under them long after leaving office.
Throughout his tenure, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Abubakar Sani Bello displayed uncommon statesmanship and deep respect for democratic principles. He neither interfered in the governance style of his successor nor imposed candidates or dictated political outcomes. Instead, he empowered his cabinet members, special advisers, and other officials to take decisions in the best interest of Niger State and Nigerlites as a whole. This leadership approach encouraged collective responsibility, accountability, and unity of purpose.
As a Public Analyst and Commentator on Good Governance, this sustained unity between a former governor and his team strongly reinforces the argument that leadership must be people-centered. I therefore respectfully call on Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago to not only carry his aides and loyalists along but also to empower them meaningfully, especially those working day and night to ensure the success of his administration and the realization of his New Niger Project agenda. Empowered aides are more productive, innovative, and committed, forming the backbone of any successful administration.
Leadership is not only about policies and projects; it is also about human relationships, inclusion, and capacity-building. Those who work tirelessly behind the scenes deserve trust, support, and welfare. At the end of every tenure, it is these aides, loyalists, and associates who remember the encouragement, empowerment, and welfarism they enjoyed and who go on to protect and promote a leader’s legacy.
In a political environment where it is not uncommon to witness incumbent governors persecute or even order the arrest of their predecessors, the respectful and mature relationship between His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Abubakar Sani Bello and Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago stands out as a positive model of political maturity. It demonstrates clearly that good governance thrives where unity, respect, empowerment, and people-first leadership are prioritised above bitterness and political vendetta.
