The stage is set for a blockbuster semi-final at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as Nigeria’s Super Falcons face off against arch-rivals Banyana Banyana of South Africa in what promises to be a fierce and emotionally charged encounter.

With decades of footballing history and a deep-rooted rivalry between the two nations, Tuesday’s fixture at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca is far more than a match — it is a battle for pride, dominance, and a place in the final.

Nigeria, record nine-time WAFCON champions, are on a mission to reclaim their continental crown, while defending champions South Africa are determined to prove their 2022 triumph in Morocco was no fluke.

Road to the Semi-Finals

The Super Falcons powered into the semi-finals with an emphatic 5-0 demolition of Zambia’s Copper Queens, showcasing their attacking prowess and defensive solidity. South Africa, on the other hand, were pushed to the brink by Senegal before emerging victorious 4-1 on penalties after a gruelling goalless draw.

Head-to-Head: History Tilts in Nigeria’s Favour
Both teams are familiar foes, having met 10 times at WAFCON. Nigeria leads the rivalry with eight victories, while South Africa have claimed two — including a famous win in the 2022 group stage. Overall, they’ve clashed 23 times across all competitions, with Nigeria winning 15, South Africa four, and four ending in draws.

Yet, recent encounters have shown a narrowing gap. South Africa’s steady rise in African women’s football has brought new intensity to this historic rivalry.

Nigeria’s Key Players Shine Bright

A revitalised Super Falcons side has been bolstered by standout performances from forward Esther Okoronkwo — the tournament’s leading assist provider with four — and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who has won Woman of the Match twice in four games. Chinwe Ihezuo leads Nigeria’s scoring chart with three goals, including a vital winner against Botswana.

In defence, Nigeria have been rock solid. The experienced Osinachi Ohale anchors the backline, supported by the energetic fullbacks Michelle Alozie and Ashley Plumptre. Impressively, the Falcons have yet to concede a single goal in the tournament.

South Africa’s Arsenal Remains Potent

Despite missing star forward Thembi Kgatlana, Banyana Banyana still boast firepower in Jermaine Seoposenwe, Hildah Magaia, and Lebogang Ramalepe. Magaia, who scored twice in the 2022 final against Morocco, remains a key figure for Desiree Ellis’s side despite being goalless so far.

What’s at Stake

Tuesday’s semi-final is more than just a route to the final — it’s about legacy. For Nigeria, a win edges them closer to a record-extending 10th WAFCON title — a quest dubbed “Mission X.” For South Africa, it’s a chance to cement their status as continental heavyweights by reaching a third consecutive final.

Match Details:
Date: Tuesday, July 22, 2025

Kickoff Time: 5:00 PM (WAT)

Venue: Stade Larbi Zaouli, Casablanca, Morocco

As the two African giants clash once more, fans can expect a thrilling, high-stakes battle — one that may well go down as one of the greatest in WAFCON history.
