The United States government has issued a strong warning to Nigerian students studying in the country, stating that failure to maintain academic commitments could result in the revocation of their student visas.
In a statement posted via its official X handle on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria reminded international students—particularly those on F-1 and M-1 visas—of the importance of adhering strictly to the conditions of their visa.
According to the embassy, students who skip classes, drop out, or abandon their academic programmes without properly notifying their institutions risk losing their visa status and may be barred from obtaining future US visas.
The embassy further reiterated this directive on its official website, stating that F-1 and M-1 visa holders must maintain full-time enrollment and make satisfactory academic progress.
It advised students who are unable to study full time due to valid reasons to immediately contact their Designated School Official (DSO) to determine if they qualify for a reduced course load under specific conditions.
This latest advisory comes just weeks after the US Mission cautioned against birth tourism. In July, the embassy warned visa applicants against travelling to the United States with the primary intention of giving birth so their children could acquire US citizenship.
It described the act as a misuse of visas and said consular officers would deny applications if such intentions were suspected.
The US government continues to emphasize strict compliance with visa rules and regulations, urging all international students to stay in good standing throughout the duration of their academic programmes.
