The United States has signaled its intention to sell arms worth $8 billion to Israel amid the ongoing conflict with Hamas, which is backed by Iran. The Biden administration formally notified Congress of the proposed sale, which includes munitions for fighter jets, attack helicopters, artillery shells, small-diameter bombs, and warheads.
This announcement follows failed diplomatic efforts to end the 15-month-long war in Gaza, which began after an October 7, 2023 attack by Palestinian Hamas militants. The attack resulted in 1,200 deaths and the kidnapping of approximately 250 individuals, according to Israeli figures.
For the deal to proceed, it must be approved by committees in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The development also occurs amid growing protests demanding an arms embargo against Israel, although the U.S. government has maintained its stance.
In August, the U.S. approved a $20 billion arms deal to Israel, which included fighter jets and other military equipment. The Biden administration has defended its position, stating that the support is essential for helping Israel protect itself from Iran-backed militant groups such as Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen.
The war in Gaza, which has caused the displacement of nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, has led to accusations of genocide against Israel, a charge it denies. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 45,000 people, with many feared trapped under the rubble. The ongoing crisis has also caused widespread hunger.
As Israel’s primary ally and weapons supplier, the United States has previously vetoed U.N. Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
