A United States lawmaker has called for a significant reduction in American aid to Nigeria, citing worsening insecurity and alleged persecution of Christians following recent violent attacks.
The lawmaker, Riley Moore, reportedly urged the U.S. government to cut Nigeria’s assistance by up to 50 percent, pointing to the deadly Palm Sunday attacks in Plateau State as evidence of what he described as a failure to protect vulnerable communities. Moore criticised the Nigerian government under Bola Tinubu, arguing that continued violence against Christian populations raises serious concerns about accountability and the effectiveness of security measures.
According to him, ongoing killings during religious observances reflect a troubling pattern, warning that U.S. support should be tied to measurable improvements in security and protection of citizens. The lawmaker further suggested that failure to address these concerns could have broader diplomatic implications, including a reassessment of bilateral relations between both countries.
The development follows renewed international attention on Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly in the Middle Belt region, where recurring attacks have sparked calls for stronger government response and greater global scrutiny.
