The United States has issued a security alert to its citizens in Mali following reports of explosions and heavy gunfire in areas close to Bamako’s international airport, amid a surge in coordinated attacks across the country.
According to the alert, American citizens were advised to “shelter in place” and avoid movement around affected locations until further notice, citing the volatile security situation in the Malian capital.
The warning comes after multiple explosions and sustained gunfire were reported early Saturday near key military installations and a camp close to the airport in Bamako. Witnesses described intense fighting, with security forces responding to attacks by armed groups.
Mali’s military confirmed that “unidentified armed terrorist groups targeted certain locations and barracks in the capital,” adding that troops were actively engaging the attackers. Similar incidents were reported in other parts of the country, including Gao, Kidal, and Sévaré, suggesting a coordinated assault by militant groups operating across the Sahel region.
While no group has officially claimed responsibility, security sources indicated that extremist factions linked to al-Qaeda and other insurgent networks may be involved, reflecting the persistent instability in Mali despite ongoing military efforts.
The development highlights the deteriorating security environment in Mali, where frequent attacks by armed groups continue to pose significant risks to civilians and foreign nationals.
