Nigerian troops have successfully repelled an attack by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a military base in Borno State, killing several terrorists during the encounter.
According to military sources, the insurgents launched the assault in the early hours, targeting a forward operating base as part of renewed attempts to destabilise security formations in the North-East. Troops, however, engaged the attackers with superior firepower, forcing them to retreat after sustaining heavy casualties.
A military spokesperson confirmed that “several ISWAP terrorists were neutralised” during the exchange, while weapons, ammunition and other logistics were recovered following the failed assault.
The troops were said to have maintained control of the base throughout the confrontation, with no loss of territory. Reinforcements were immediately deployed to secure the area and prevent further attacks.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist groups in the region, assuring residents that efforts to degrade insurgent capabilities and restore lasting peace in the North-East would continue.
The latest development comes amid intensified military operations against ISWAP and Boko Haram factions operating around the Lake Chad axis and parts of Borno State.
