Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a notorious commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta, popularly known as “Gentle de Yahoo.”
Security sources said the feared militant, who for years allegedly terrorised communities across Okigwe and neighbouring areas, was captured during a coordinated intelligence-led operation at his hideout in Aku-Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State.
“The successful operation was executed by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, working closely with sister security services and other law enforcement agencies,” one source confirmed.
During the raid, troops recovered a cache of arms and other items linked to the group’s violent activities. Recovered items included one English-made pistol, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, one cartridge, six mobile phones, military and police uniforms, and a German flag reportedly used as a symbol by the group.
Troops also discovered a workshop used for dismantling stolen vehicles for resale, disrupting what military officials described as a “major criminal enterprise” in the region. Ten motorcycles found at the scene were destroyed to prevent further use in criminal operations.
Military sources hailed the arrest as a “major relief” for residents of Imo State who have endured months of attacks, kidnappings, and extortion allegedly orchestrated by Gentle de Yahoo and his gang.
“This arrest is a clear message that no criminal, no matter how notorious, can hide forever. The people of Imo can now breathe easier,” the source said.
Residents in Okigwe and surrounding communities have welcomed the operation as a crucial step toward restoring peace in the South East. Community leaders praised the troops and urged authorities to maintain the momentum by dismantling remaining criminal cells and enhancing intelligence sharing among security agencies.
Nationwide Counter-Terrorism Successes
The Imo operation formed part of a broader nationwide offensive targeting kidnappers, armed robbers, terrorists, and violent extremist groups.
In Adamawa State, troops rescued five kidnapped victims in Madagali Local Government Area and reunited them with their families. In Katsina State, five victims were freed at Kukasheka Ward in Malumfashi LGA, while two others were rescued in Lokoja, Kogi State.
Also in Katsina, soldiers neutralised two terrorists and recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and a motorcycle. In Benue State, one violent extremist was killed, with a mobile phone and assorted charms recovered.
Across Benue, Kogi, and Kaduna States, 11 suspects were arrested for offences including armed robbery, gun running, and terrorist financing. In Plateau State, troops recovered 40 rustled cattle, which were promptly returned to their rightful owners.
Military authorities commended the gallantry of the troops involved, vowing to sustain pressure on criminal elements until lasting peace is restored nationwide.
“These successes are part of our renewed resolve to rid every part of this country of criminals. We will not relent until peace is fully restored,” a senior Army officer stated.
“The arrest of Gentle de Yahoo represents a symbolic victory for security forces battling separatist militias in the South East. Communities across Imo State and beyond now look forward to a future free from fear and violence,” the officer added.
