The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has paid glowing tribute to the late Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Alagoa, describing him as a “rare breed” devoid of arrogance and elitism.

Speaking on Wednesday during a valedictory court session held in Abuja to honor the late jurist, the CJN lauded him as a courageous and principled figure who fought relentlessly for his beliefs.

Justice Kekere-Ekun emphasized the importance of leaving a legacy that would inspire future generations. “His lordship’s passing reminds us all that life is fleeting, and we must strive to leave behind footprints worthy of remembrance,” she said.

She further noted that although Justice Alagoa’s earthly journey had ended, his legacy remains indelible. “Even in death, Alagoa’s legacy endures as a beacon of inspiration, wisdom, and unwavering integrity. His fatherly love, humility, and dedication to justice have left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”

The CJN described the late justice as a towering figure in both stature and legal intellect, whose judicial pronouncements were distinguished by methodical reasoning and brilliance. She urged his family to uphold the values and legacies he left behind.

Tributes from Legal Luminaries

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, also praised the late justice, calling him a firm and courageous jurist. Fagbemi highlighted Alagoa’s brief but impactful tenure on the Supreme Court bench, noting that his bold statements and contributions continue to spark national discourse across legal, political, and social spheres.

Commending the CJN for organizing the special court session, Fagbemi said it was a fitting tribute to a man who served Nigeria with unwavering dedication.

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, called on Nigerians to honor Justice Alagoa by upholding the values he championed, including justice, integrity, and the rule of law. “We must rededicate ourselves to the high standards set by Justice Alagoa by working passionately for the progress of Nigeria,” Osigwe stated.

A Life of Service

Justice Alagoa, an indigene of Ogbolomabiri Nembe in Bayelsa State, was born on October 4, 1943. Known for his remarkable intellect and philosophical depth, he left a legacy of brilliance and dedication to justice.

He passed away on December 5, 2024, at the age of 70. His life and contributions to the judiciary remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
