Gulma community in Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State was thrown into mourning following an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists.

The assault, which occurred late Thursday night, left one resident dead and six others hospitalized.

According to the Chairman of Argungu Local Government, Aliyu Sani Gulma, the assailants stormed the village around 11:00 p.m. while most residents were asleep. In the ensuing attack, one person was killed, and six others sustained gunshot wounds.

The injured victims were later transported to the Federal Medical Centre in Birnin Kebbi for treatment.

The attackers reportedly fled into the forest after realizing that some residents had mobilized to resist them.

Security agencies were promptly alerted, and troops were deployed to the community to safeguard lives and property.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Kebbi State Police Command, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, stated that mobile policemen had been dispatched to the area to prevent further attacks and restore calm.

This latest assault comes just two months after Senator Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central, claimed that Nigerian military operations had forced the terror group to flee into Niger Republic.

He had emphasized the urgency of tackling the menace to prevent the North West from suffering the same fate as the North East, which had been ravaged by insurgency.

Aliero had previously highlighted the strategic importance of the North West, given its population and agricultural resources, stressing that securing the region was crucial.

He also noted that although the Nigerian military had pursued the terrorists, they could not cross international borders, leaving further action in the hands of Nigerien authorities under existing military cooperation.

The recent attack underscores the persistent security challenges in Kebbi State, raising concerns over the effectiveness of counterterrorism efforts in the region.
