The Federal Government and the military have been urged to intensify their fight against banditry in the Northwest, as it remains the only viable option to restore peace and stability in the region.
Addressing journalists in Gusau, Zamfara State, a local farmer, Auwal Babangida, lamented the severe economic impact of banditry, particularly its role in exacerbating food insecurity.
Babangida pointed out that banditry has crippled agricultural activities, as farmers are unable to cultivate their land due to the constant threat posed by bandits. This, he explained, has led to skyrocketing food prices in the region.
He commended the government’s renewed efforts to combat the menace but stressed that the security of lives and property must not be treated lightly.
The farmer also called on the government to expose and prosecute the sponsors of banditry, regardless of their social or political standing.
He emphasized that no individual is above the law, urging authorities to thoroughly investigate accusations and uncover those behind the ongoing crisis.
Recalling previous instances where traditional rulers and political figures were linked to banditry, Babangida noted that several high-profile arrests had been made, but the outcomes of these cases remain unclear.
He stressed that the bandits are not acting independently and that the government must act decisively to uncover and neutralize their backers to bring lasting peace to the Northwest region.
