A group of suspected arsonists set fire to the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) building at Ezeoke Nsu, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, on Tuesday. In a related attack, the residence of former Senator Frank Ibezim, who represented the Okigwe District in the Senate, was also set ablaze by the same group of miscreants.
In response to the incidents, Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, condemned the attacks, labelling them “senseless and unwarranted acts of arson.” He assured the public that the Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, would work relentlessly to ensure those responsible are apprehended and brought to justice.
To address the situation, Danjuma has deployed the Tactical Unit of the Imo State Police Command to investigate and arrest the perpetrators. He further instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, who oversees the State Criminal Investigation Department, to lead a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Danjuma emphasized that those involved in the attack will face the full weight of the law, urging the public to avoid spreading fake news or making inflammatory remarks that could disrupt the fragile peace in Imo State. He warned that anyone caught spreading false information would face severe legal consequences.
The arson incidents have raised concerns over the increasing violence in the region, and the Police remain committed to upholding peace and security for the communities affected by these acts of destruction.
