Super Eagles Target Perfect AFCON Group Stage as Uganda Face Must-Win Test

Nigeria will face Uganda on Tuesday in their final Group C fixture of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with contrasting objectives and a compelling personal storyline set to shape the encounter in Fez.

The Super Eagles have already secured qualification for the knockout stage and confirmed top spot in the group following successive victories over Tanzania and Tunisia. A win against Uganda would complete a rare perfect group-stage run, only the fourth in Nigeria’s AFCON history.

With progression already assured, the match carries little pressure for the three-time champions. For Uganda, however, it is a decisive encounter. The Cranes are bottom of Group C with one point from two matches and must defeat Nigeria to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Beyond the group permutations, the spotlight will also be on Ugandan forward Uche Ikpeazu, whose Nigerian heritage adds an emotional dimension to the tie. Born in England to a Nigerian father from Delta State and a Ugandan mother, Ikpeazu made his full international debut for Uganda in September 2025.

Speaking ahead of the clash, the 30-year-old acknowledged his strong ties to Nigeria but stressed his commitment to Uganda.

“My dad is from Delta state. I am half Nigerian; that is where my dad is from. So there is always going to be an emotional attachment,” Ikpeazu said.

Despite the personal connection, the striker was unequivocal about his intentions.

“I am Ugandan as well, and I play for Uganda. I will be hoping to beat Nigeria. So, Dad, I am sorry,” he added.

Ikpeazu also dismissed talk of a scripted celebration if he scores against the Super Eagles.

“I do not have a planned celebration against Nigeria. But you know in football, emotions can get the better of you.”

Nigeria go into the fixture buoyed by early qualification, which has helped ease the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Super Eagles have been impressive in attack, though defensive discipline is expected to be a key focus as they aim to finish the group stage with a flawless record.

For Uganda, the challenge is formidable. A defeat would end their campaign, while a victory would rank among the tournament’s major upsets and thrust a Nigerian-born striker into the spotlight against his father’s homeland.
