Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has pledged to upgrade the state’s health training institutions with cutting-edge equipment to enhance the quality of teaching and learning. The governor made this commitment on Sunday during a reception in honor of the outgoing Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr. Abubakar Faruk.
Addressing the audience, Governor Aliyu identified the lack of modern equipment in the state-owned health institutions as a key obstacle to effective training in line with global best practices. He emphasized the urgent need to reverse this trend, stating, “We cannot continue with obsolete teaching equipment in our health training institutions when technology is advancing rapidly in the areas of digital and state-of-the-art equipment.”
The governor reiterated that the improvement of Sokoto’s health sector remains one of the top priorities of his administration, which is part of his broader nine-point agenda for the state. He also highlighted the recent recruitment of over 800 nurses and midwives who had been awaiting employment for the past nine years, noting that this move is aimed at addressing the long-standing manpower shortages in the state’s health sector.
Governor Aliyu praised Dr. Faruk for his significant contributions to the development of Sokoto’s School of Nursing and expressed a desire to continue benefiting from his wealth of experience even after his retirement. “I want to assure you that this administration will tap into the expertise of the outgoing Registrar for the benefit of our state,” he said.
At the event, the governor presented Dr. Faruk with Senator Aliyu Wamakko’s ‘Award of Excellence’ in recognition of his outstanding service to the state and the country.
