Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦72,500 for civil servants in the state, with immediate effect. The governor also announced the suspension of tax deductions on the approved wage for one year.
Ododo made this announcement on Monday after signing the agreement for the wage increase. He stated, “The new minimum wage of seventy-two thousand five hundred naira will take immediate effect to help workers cope with the current economic situation in the country.”
Chairman of the Minimum Wage Committee, Mr. Elijah Evenemi, emphasized that the agreement is a win for the people, not for any political party.
He praised the governor for allowing the committee to operate independently, which helped them achieve this milestone.
This development follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval of a national minimum wage of ₦70,000 for Nigerian workers on July 18, 2024. The president also pledged to review the minimum wage law every three years.
The decision was reached after discussions with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
