Gunmen launched a deadly attack on the Nibo community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday, leaving an unknown number of people feared dead.

The assailants, reportedly arriving in a brown Lexus 300 Jeep, opened fire on residents at the Oye Nwochichi market near the Community Old Maternity, eyewitnesses said.

While the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, locals reported that at least 10 bodies have been recovered so far.

The Anambra State Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack, attributing it to a clash between rival cult groups.

He also revealed that the State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has ordered the immediate deployment of officers to the area and urged witnesses to come forward with any information that could aid in apprehending the attackers.

“The Command is aware of a suspected cult-related clash today, 20/10/2024, in Nibo, Awka South LGA.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional operatives to the area for necessary action,” Ikenga stated.

“Preliminary reports are still sketchy, and we urge witnesses to provide information that could help identify the perpetrators for possible arrest,” he added.
