Kazeem Ogunleye’s late strike secured a 1-0 victory for Nigerian champions, Rangers, over Angola’s Sagrada Esperanca in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round clash in Uyo on Friday.
Ogunleye found the back of the net 12 minutes before full time, breaking the deadlock in a tightly contested match.
Despite their victory, Rangers once again struggled with finishing, echoing their earlier challenge against US Zilimadjou of Comoros in the first round.
The second leg is set for Sunday, November 22, at the Estadio 11 de Novembro in Luanda, where Rangers will need just a draw to advance to the lucrative group stage.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s other CAF Champions League representatives, Remo Stars, were knocked out in the first round by Morocco’s AS FAR.
