President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for deeper global cooperation and reforms to the United Nations (UN) Security Council, insisting that Nigeria and other African nations deserve permanent seats.
Speaking at the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), through Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu stressed the need for collective action to tackle global challenges, including terrorism, climate change, poverty, and inequality.
Tinubu emphasized the importance of multilateralism, warning against the rising trend of nationalism and singularity that undermines global efforts to address pressing issues.
He urged world leaders to prioritize inclusivity, equality, and cooperation, which are core principles of the UN.
Addressing the growing debt burden in developing nations, Tinubu called for debt forgiveness and reforms to the international financial system to aid developing countries in achieving meaningful progress.
He also highlighted the importance of recovering illicit financial flows to support economic growth in affected nations.
The Nigerian leader further underscored the need for reforms to the UN Security Council to reflect the diversity of the global community, advocating for permanent seats for African nations to strengthen the council’s relevance and credibility.
