The Borno State Police Command has re-arrested a convict, Kyari Kur, also known as Henry, who escaped from a correctional facility during severe flooding in Maiduguri, the state capital, in September 2024. Kur, 28, had been serving a sentence for criminal conspiracy and theft before he fled when the floodwaters collapsed the prison’s fence.

In a statement on Friday, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed Kur’s re-arrest, explaining that he was apprehended following a tip-off. “On October 10, 2024, police surveillance at Gubio divisional headquarters received credible information that Kur was sighted in Gubio town. Acting swiftly, the police apprehended Kur,” Daso stated.

Kur has been profiled and will be handed over to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action, the statement added.

ASP Daso reiterated the police command’s dedication to public safety and justice, appreciating the public’s cooperation in providing timely information.

In the aftermath of the September flooding, no fewer than 281 inmates escaped from the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre. The command previously announced the re-arrest of another escapee, Abubakar Mohammed, in September.

Authorities continue efforts to recapture remaining escapees.
