A senior police officer in Niger State, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shafi’u Bawa, has reportedly taken his own life.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Kontagora Local Government Area. According to authorities, Bawa’s father, Usman Bawa, a resident of the Rigasa area in Kontagora, reported the matter to the police.
Sources told PUNCH that Bawa was discovered hanging from the ceiling by his father, who entered the room and found his lifeless body.
Police operatives later arrived at the scene and transported the deceased to the General Hospital, Kontagora, where a medical doctor confirmed his death. His remains were subsequently released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
A police statement obtained by our correspondent confirmed the development:
“Today, Saturday, 08/02/25, at approximately 14:10 hours, one Mr. Usman Bawa, male, of Rigasa area in Kontagora, reported that his son, AP/No 337979, ASP Shafi’u Usman Bawa, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling.
The lifeless body was taken to the General Hospital, Kontagora, where a medical doctor confirmed his death. The corpse was released to the family for burial according to Islamic rites. Further updates will be communicated.”
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, for comments were unsuccessful, as he neither answered phone calls nor responded to a WhatsApp message sent to him.
