The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed confidence in its ability to increase its governorship tally beyond the current 12 states and reclaim governance at the national level by 2027.

During a visit to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, at his hometown in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) made this declaration, citing widespread dissatisfaction with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) due to persistent economic hardships.

Alhaji Ahmed Yayare, PDP National Treasurer, speaking on behalf of the NWC, stated, “The level of hunger and poverty in the land is overwhelming. Nothing stops the PDP from producing the president and vice president in 2027. The APC cannot even campaign—they will be stoned. Nigerians are yearning for change, and PDP is the only viable opposition to bring that change.”

He emphasized that failure to reclaim national leadership could spell doom for democracy in Nigeria, urging party governors and stakeholders to work in unity to achieve their shared vision.

The visit also served as an opportunity for the NWC to commiserate with Governor Diri over the recent deaths of Deputy Inspector General of Police (rtd.) Moses Jituboh and the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei.

Repositioning the PDP for 2027
PDP National Secretary, Ude Okoye, reiterated the party’s commitment to strengthening its internal structures and projecting itself as a credible alternative for quality leadership. He lauded Governor Diri for his developmental efforts in Bayelsa, calling him a model of effective governance.

“The NWC is determined to reposition the PDP and demonstrate to Nigerians that we offer a genuine alternative to the APC. Respect for the party and its governors is paramount,” Okoye said.

Governor Diri Calls for Unity Among Party Leaders
In response, Governor Diri stressed the need for cohesion within the PDP, calling on governors and stakeholders to prioritize the party’s collective interest over individual ambitions.

“We must work together as governors and do what is right without minding whose ox is gored. Consensus-building should be our first approach to resolving disputes rather than rushing to court. Posterity will not forgive us if PDP collapses under our watch,” Diri warned.

He further cautioned against disloyalty within the party ranks, stating, “If anyone feels bigger than the PDP, they are free to leave. The PDP has made most of us who we are today, and we owe it to the party to stay committed.”

Governor Diri also voiced his support for forming a formidable coalition to strengthen the PDP’s position and prepare it for national leadership.

“Our party must stand strong and united to salvage Nigeria from its current challenges. Together, we can restore hope and bring about the change Nigerians desperately need,” he concluded.
