The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended Senator Dino Melaye, a prominent member of the party, over allegations of anti-party activities.
The suspension, as reported by Punch Online on Friday, was enacted by the executive committee of the Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1 after reviewing the findings of a disciplinary committee set up to investigate Melaye’s actions.
His recent conduct was deemed harmful to the party’s interests and unity, prompting the decision.
This is not an isolated incident, as the PDP has previously taken disciplinary actions against other members accused of similar offenses.
In August 2024, Peter Babalola, a party chieftain from Osun, was suspended for alleged anti-party activities and failing to attend party meetings for two years.
Additionally, the Benue State chapter of the PDP suspended former Governor Samuel Ortom for similar reasons.
Senator Gabriel Suswam and other party members have also faced summons over allegations of misconduct and anti-party behavior.
These moves highlight the PDP’s dedication to enforcing discipline and preserving party cohesion. However, specific details regarding the charges against Melaye are still unfolding.
The resolution by the Ward committee stated, “Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party, and his continued membership is no longer tenable.
Therefore, the Ward party exco hereby suspends Dino Melaye from the Peoples Democratic Party, effective immediately.”
The suspension was carried out in accordance with Article 59 (1) of the PDP Constitution, which grants the Ward executive committees the authority to discipline members found guilty of misconduct.
Further developments on this matter are anticipated.
