Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu is on the verge of returning to the Turkish Süper Lig, with Göztepe pushing hard to secure his signature.
Onuachu’s former club, Trabzonspor, has been actively pursuing the Nigerian forward, aiming to bring him back following his impressive spell last season, during which he netted 17 goals in 25 matches for the club. Despite Trabzonspor’s keen interest, Southampton, Onuachu’s current club, has been reluctant to release him, holding firm on their valuation of the player.
However, Göztepe has now emerged as a serious contender to hijack the deal from their rivals. The club’s offer appears more attractive, and they are making vigorous efforts to finalise the transfer. With Southampton unable to guarantee Onuachu regular first-team football, the striker is reportedly eager to move to a club where he can secure more consistent playing time.
Negotiations are expected to reach a conclusion within the next two days, with Southampton initially setting a €15 million transfer fee for the Nigerian forward. It now seems likely that Onuachu will spend another season in Turkey, with Göztepe determined to seal the deal.
Should the transfer go through, Onuachu will join fellow Nigerian international Victor Osimhen, who recently completed a four-month loan move to Galatasaray.
Onuachu, however, will miss the Super Eagles’ upcoming AFCON qualifier against Benin Republic, set to take place in just under three days.
