The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), showing that more than 1.1 million candidates achieved the benchmark of five credits and above.
Out of the total candidates who sat for the examination, 1,144,496 representing 84.26 percent, obtained five credits and above.
A further breakdown revealed that 818,492 candidates, or 60.26 percent, secured five credits and above including Mathematics and English, the two core subjects required for university admission.
The results were announced at NECO headquarters in Minna, Niger State, by the Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Professor Danteni Ibrahim Wushishi, during a press briefing held on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
While celebrating the performance of the candidates, the council also highlighted key challenges encountered during the conduct of the examination.
Thirty-eight schools across 30 states were identified for mass examination malpractice and are to face sanctions after being invited for discussions.
In addition, nine supervisors were recommended for blacklisting for offenses ranging from aiding and abetting cheating to unruly conduct and poor supervision.
NECO further reported that a communal clash in Adamawa State disrupted examinations in eight schools between July 7 and July 25, 2025. The incident affected 599 candidates, 13 subjects, and 29 examination papers.
Discussions are ongoing with the Adamawa State Government to reconduct the examinations for the affected schools, and their results remain withheld.
The 2025 SSCE results were released 54 days after the final paper in August, a timeline NECO described as part of its drive for professionalism, efficiency, and credibility in the conduct of national examinations.
The council also attributed the successful release of results to the discipline, expertise, and dedication of its staff, noting that the outcome reflects NECO’s growing reputation for integrity and reliability among students, educational institutions, and the general public.
