The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Police Trust Fund (NPTF), Mohammad Sheidu, has announced plans for a major infrastructural overhaul at the Nigeria Police College in Ikeja, Lagos, as part of efforts to elevate the facility and other police training institutions nationwide to world-class standards.

During an assessment tour of police facilities in Lagos, Sheidu revealed that the upgrades would cover essential areas, including training halls, dormitories, hostels, and kitchen facilities.

“We’re committed to addressing critical needs like lighting, water supply, and overall facility rehabilitation,” Sheidu stated.

He added that the NPTF is prioritizing transparency and integrity in the renovation process, with a dedicated monitoring and evaluation team to oversee projects from start to finish.

“We stand for integrity and accountability,” Sheidu affirmed.

“I’m here with members of the National Assembly as part of our team.

We’re conducting a needs assessment to identify priorities, and when work begins, monitoring teams will ensure that every project is completed to standard,” he added.

Reflecting on the condition of the Lagos facilities, Sheidu expressed satisfaction but acknowledged that improvements are necessary to bring them up to global standards.

He noted, “I’ve toured similar facilities in other states like Rivers, and I’m encouraged by what I see here.

We aim to raise this facility to a new level, tackling issues like leaking roofs and other areas that need repair.”

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs, Abubakar Yalleman, commended the maintenance efforts at the Ikeja training school and emphasized his committee’s commitment to ensuring accountability in fund allocation as mandated by Sections 88 and 89 of Nigeria’s Constitution.

“We support transparency and accountability, as does the NPTF, and we will follow up on the use of allocated funds to ensure they are spent as intended,” he stated.

Nigeria Police College Commandant, Fasuba Akinyele, expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as a significant milestone.

“The Secretary’s visit underscores his commitment to our institution among other colleges,” he said.

Akinyele also highlighted a structured communication system that allows trainees to relay issues efficiently to their course officers through designated representatives, ensuring prompt action on emerging needs.

This initiative marks a significant step toward improving police training facilities and supporting the NPTF’s mission to enhance the capacity and welfare of law enforcement officers in Nigeria.
