The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has announced that it will release its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
With the theme “The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development,” the SCP will provide critical weather and climate forecasts for the year ahead.
In a statement issued on Monday, NiMet highlighted its annual responsibility to advise the government and the public on weather, climate, and water-related matters. The agency publishes predictions on rainfall, temperature, and other climatic patterns in the first quarter of each year.
Speaking about the importance of the SCP, NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, noted that the publication serves as a vital resource for various sectors.
“The Seasonal Climate Prediction highlights vital Weather and Climate information that may affect socio-economic activities in the following sectors during the year: Agriculture, Aviation, Disaster Risk Management, Health, Oil & Gas, Telecommunication, Tourism, Transport (Water and Land), Power (hydro and renewable), Water Resources Management, etc.,” he explained.
Prof. Anosike further stressed the SCP’s value in addressing sector-specific needs, adding, “The socioeconomic implications of the expected rainfall and temperature patterns for some sectors of the economy are also presented in the publication.”
The 2025 SCP will include detailed forecasts such as the onset and cessation dates of the rainy season, the length of the cropping season, rainfall estimates for all 774 Local Government Areas, temperature projections for January to May, and vigilance forecasts for malaria and meningitis.
According to the statement, the SCP document is regarded as a national resource, attracting stakeholders from various sectors, including government, development partners, NGOs, the diplomatic community, and farmer associations.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, is expected to officially present the document.
The event will also feature the launch of a summary document for policymakers, translations of the SCP into three major Nigerian languages, and a report on the State of the Climate in Nigeria.
