The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh alert, warning that 19 states, including Sokoto, Kaduna, and Lagos, face varying levels of flash flood risk this July due to intensified rainfall across the country.
In its July 2025 flash flood risk outlook released on Monday, NiMet highlighted that the affected states are likely to experience significant flooding events as the rainy season progresses.
Sokoto tops the list as a high-risk state, while other states identified as vulnerable include Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.
As part of its advisory, NiMet urged residents in the listed areas to take proactive measures to reduce the risk of disaster.
“Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, including relocating from flood-prone areas, clearing blocked drainages, and staying alert to weather updates,” the agency stated.
Additional recommendations include preparing emergency kits, turning off electrical and gas connections during flooding, and strengthening mudslide prevention strategies in hilly regions.
NiMet emphasized the importance of acting on these warnings to mitigate the potential human and material losses caused by flash floods.
