Nigerians are basking in a wave of national pride after an extraordinary 24 hours that saw Edo Queens secure a historic semifinal spot in the CAF Women’s Champions League and Chidinma Adetchina emerge as the first runner-up at the Miss Universe 2024 pageant.

Edo Queens, representing Nigeria in the prestigious football tournament, stunned defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns with a thrilling 2-1 victory. Despite falling behind early to a 24th-minute goal by South Africa’s Melinda Kgadiete, the resilient Nigerian side mounted an unforgettable comeback. Peace Essien’s dramatic 95th-minute equalizer was followed by Mary Mamudu’s decisive winner in extra time, propelling Edo Queens to the top of Group B with seven points.

The victory was particularly sweet for Nigerians, as it not only ousted the South African champions but also underscored the team’s growing dominance on the continent.

Hours later, Nigeria had more reason to celebrate as Chidinma Adetchina dazzled on the global stage at the Miss Universe 2024 competition, finishing as the first runner-up. Her success came after South Africa’s representative withdrew, adding to the jubilation among Nigerians.

Social media erupted with praise and excitement for both achievements. Fans lauded Edo Queens’ heroics and Chidinma’s remarkable accomplishment, with comments like, “Nothing as sweet as Edo Queens beating Sundowns and Chidinma making the Top 5,” and “It’s been a beautiful 24 hours for Nigerian Queens. Congratulations to Chidinma and Edo!”

Others celebrated the moment with messages such as “All hail the Queens” and “Congratulations girls, making Nigeria proud!”

As Edo Queens prepare to face DR Congo’s TP Mazembe in the semifinals, they carry the hopes of a nation eager to see them become the first Nigerian team to reach the tournament’s final.

These dual victories—on the football field and the global stage—highlight the talent, determination, and resilience of Nigerians, inspiring a sense of unity and optimism. With such momentum, the nation looks forward to even greater triumphs in the future.
