A recent Facebook post by a Nigerian man based in the US has drawn attention to the high costs and unique accommodations in New York City.
The man, reflecting on his early days in the city, shared his experience of staying in what he described as a pod-like ‘box,’ a temporary lodging solution he encountered years ago.
According to his account, he paid $80 for a mere eight-hour stay in this unconventional space.
The ‘box’ was notably lacking in amenities, such as an extractor fan, which contributed to an uncomfortable environment.
To make matters worse, he was required to remain out in the city until late evening, as the space was only available during pre-booked time slots.
The box featured a loud alarm designed to buzz when the rental period ended, further emphasizing the makeshift nature of the accommodation.
The man’s post, accompanied by photos from that period, serves as a stark reminder of the steep prices and unusual lodging options that newcomers to New York may face.
His candid reflection highlights the sometimes harsh realities of navigating the city’s high-cost living and the lengths some may go to find affordable accommodations.
