The Federal Government of Nigeria has firmly rejected allegations made by Nigerien authorities that Nigeria played a significant role in the December 13 attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline in Gaya, located in Niger’s Dosso Region.
In a statement released on Saturday, Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, categorically denied any involvement by Nigerian security forces with the Lakurawa terrorist group or any allegations of collaboration in the attack.
The Nigerian government expressed its condolences to Niger but reiterated its commitment to fighting terrorism and distancing itself from any extremist groups.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria strongly refutes the claims made by the Nigerien authorities, which suggest that the Lakurawa terrorist group, with assistance from foreign security forces, including Nigerian forces, was behind the December 13 attack on the oil pipeline in Gaya, Dosso Region,” the statement read. “While we extend our condolences to the Government of Niger, we stress that the perpetrators were not supported or aided by Nigerian authorities.”
The statement also emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to combating terrorism: “The Government of Nigeria is unwavering in its commitment to the fight against terrorism and will not condone or support the actions of such groups.”
The Nigerien foreign minister had previously summoned Nigeria’s chargé d’affaires, accusing the neighboring country of acting as a “rear base” to destabilize Niger. Tensions between Nigeria and Niger have been high since the military coup in Niger in 2023, which led to the country’s withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In addition, the Nigerian government dismissed claims of a French military presence in northern Nigeria, allegedly aimed at destabilizing Niger. It labeled these accusations as unfounded and urged their immediate dismissal.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria also expresses serious concern over claims of French military forces operating in northern Nigeria to destabilize the Government of Niger. These allegations are baseless and should be disregarded entirely,” the statement said.
“Nigeria’s relationship with France has always been one of mutual respect, and Nigeria is committed to maintaining a peaceful and cordial relationship with Niger for the benefit of both nations.”
