The Federal Government has initiated discussions with a Chinese aircraft manufacturing company to establish a leasing agreement that would enhance the fleet capacity of Nigerian airlines.
According to aviation sources, the talks form part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, led by Minister Festus Keyamo, to secure favorable leasing arrangements for local carriers. The deal seeks to leverage international partnerships to improve airline operations and address fleet shortfalls.
A senior official within the ministry was quoted as saying that Nigeria aims to “ensure that aircraft are made available to local operators under conditions that reduce cost and risk.” The official emphasized that such collaborations are critical for boosting both domestic and international route operations.
Minister Keyamo has reportedly assured stakeholders that the government will provide needed regulatory and institutional support to facilitate these leasing deals. Key among reforms already in process are improvements in the legal framework for aircraft registration, aircraft recovery, and deregistration — all of which impact lessors’ confidence in operating within Nigeria.
“These discussions demonstrate our commitment to providing the enabling environment for aircraft lessors to engage with Nigerian airlines without undue delay or risk.”
Industry analysts believe that if finalized, the leasing agreement could reduce capital outlays for Nigerian airlines, accelerate fleet modernization, and potentially lower fares for travellers.
