The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the terrorist attacks that occurred on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, targeting a military airport, a training center, and other sensitive sites in Bamako, the capital of Mali.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson, Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, Nigeria expressed its outrage at the “abominable” act, which led to the destruction of several military aircraft and caused significant casualties.
“This heinous act, which has claimed lives and destroyed military assets, is a grim reminder of the ongoing threat extremist groups pose to the region. Acts of terrorism, regardless of location, endanger peace and security across West Africa,” the statement read.
The Nigerian government extended its heartfelt condolences to Mali, particularly to the families of the victims. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this tragic incident,” the statement added.
The attack in Bamako, which was claimed by an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group, is particularly alarming given that the Malian capital is typically shielded from the daily violence seen in other parts of the country.
Nigeria reiterated its commitment to regional security, stressing the need for concerted efforts to combat terrorism across West Africa.
