The Lagos State Government, in partnership with the Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI) and other stakeholders, is gearing up to mark the annual ‘Car-Free Day’ on Sunday, September 22, 2024. This initiative aims to promote non-motorised transport (NMT), encouraging road users to leave their cars at home in favor of walking and cycling.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Transportation, the car-free day seeks to raise awareness about the environmental and health benefits of NMT, which includes cycling and walking. The event comes at a time when fuel prices have led to a noticeable reduction in the number of vehicles on Lagos roads.

The car-free day is a global event celebrated on September 22 each year, where cities encourage residents to use alternative means of transport. In some countries, streets are even closed off to vehicles in a bid to reduce traffic congestion and promote a cleaner environment.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized that the key objective of the initiative is to highlight the importance of physical activity in improving public health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), physical inactivity is the fourth leading cause of global mortality, accounting for 6% of deaths worldwide. Increasing daily physical activity, especially in urban areas, is vital for combating this risk.

The event also serves as an opportunity for governments to advocate for enhanced public transportation systems, offering viable and reliable alternatives to private cars. The emphasis will be on promoting walking, cycling, and inclusive mobility as primary modes of transport, helping to reduce air pollution and improve the quality of life for city dwellers.

The day will be marked with various activities, including cycling competitions, training sessions, skating, and fun-filled exercises like stretching, music, and dance. Hundreds of participants are expected to gather at Ahmadu Bello Way for the event.

In summary, Lagos’ observance of Car-Free Day aims to improve environmental health, reduce traffic congestion, and promote an active, healthy lifestyle for its residents.
