The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has honoured Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong following his decision to retire from international football with immediate effect, bringing an end to a decade-long career with the national team.
In a statement released on Thursday, the NFF described Troost-Ekong as “a dedicated, selfless and humble leader” whose professionalism, discipline and patriotism set a high standard for future generations.
Troost-Ekong, who debuted for Nigeria in 2015, earned 83 caps and featured in five major tournaments, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup and three consecutive Africa Cup of Nations campaigns in 2019, 2021 and 2023. During his international career, he won both silver and bronze medals at the AFCON.
The federation praised his conduct throughout his years of service, noting that even before he became captain, he was “pleasant, disciplined and ambitious,” always proud to represent the country.
His outstanding 2023 AFCON campaign in Côte d’Ivoire was singled out as a major highlight. Troost-Ekong scored decisive goals en route to the final and was named Man of the Competition — the first Nigerian in decades to win the tournament’s MVP award.
The NFF said the defender exits the international stage “a fulfilled man,” with a legacy that will inspire younger players.
“As he retires from the international game, the Nigeria Football Federation wishes William Troost-Ekong the very best in his future endeavours and will support him in achieving his goals within the round-leather game,” the federation stated.
