A potential aviation disaster was narrowly averted on Sunday when a Rano Air aircraft, with registration number 5N-BZY, suffered an engine failure midflight en route from Kano to Sokoto. The flight crew executed an emergency landing, preventing any casualties.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:05 p.m. when engine 1 failed, triggering smoke alarms and filling both the cabin and cockpit with visible smoke. The flight crew immediately activated emergency protocols, donned oxygen masks, and maintained communication with air traffic control to manage the unfolding situation.
Thanks to the crew’s swift and professional response, the smoke dissipated before landing. The aircraft safely touched down at 3:34 p.m., with no injuries reported among the passengers or crew.
In the wake of the incident, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) announced the immediate grounding of the aircraft, pending a full investigation by its Directorate of Airworthiness. NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu stressed the agency’s strict adherence to global safety standards.
The NCAA prioritises safety. The records are clear. More advanced countries have worse air incidents than Nigeria because, here, flights will get cancelled if there is the slightest concern about safety,” he said.
As a result of the grounding, efforts to dispatch a replacement aircraft to retrieve stranded passengers in Sokoto were disrupted. The substitute aircraft was already scheduled for an Abuja–Katsina service, leading to the cancellation of the Sokoto leg to avoid further operational challenges.
Engineers have since begun a thorough technical assessment of the grounded aircraft, which remains out of service.
Aviation experts have commended the flight crew for their handling of the situation, describing it as a testament to Nigeria’s improving safety culture and regulatory compliance in the aviation sector.
The NCAA reiterated its stance on prioritising safety over convenience, noting, “Passenger safety will always come first.”
