Real Madrid reclaimed bragging rights in a pulsating El Clásico on Sunday, edging Barcelona 2–1 at the Santiago Bernabéu to extend their La Liga lead to five points.

Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after latching onto a clever through ball from Jude Bellingham and slotting past Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. The visitors responded shortly before half-time when Fermín López pounced on a loose ball to level the score.

However, Bellingham restored Madrid’s advantage in the 43rd minute, tapping home from close range after Éder Militão’s header was parried into his path—a goal that ultimately sealed the win for Xabi Alonso’s side.

The second half produced no shortage of drama. Mbappé squandered a chance to double Madrid’s lead when his penalty was superbly saved by Szczęsny, while another Madrid goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Tensions reached boiling point in stoppage time when Barcelona midfielder Pedri received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Aurélien Tchouaméni, reducing the visitors to ten men. A brief post-match scuffle between players from both sides required police intervention as frustrations over refereeing decisions spilled over.

The victory ends Real Madrid’s four-game winless streak in Clásicos and reaffirms their dominance at the summit of La Liga. Manager Xabi Alonso hailed his players’ composure, saying they showed “the mentality of champions” in a fiercely contested encounter.

For Barcelona, the defeat highlighted defensive lapses and missed opportunities, leaving them to rue costly errors and controversial officiating decisions in a match that slipped from their grasp.

With this result, Madrid not only tightened their hold on the title race but also sent a strong message to their rivals—they remain the team to beat in Spain’s top flight.
