Liverpool will launch their English Premier League title defence on Friday night as clear favourites, having strengthened significantly since the Jurgen Klopp era.

The Reds host Bournemouth in the season’s curtain-raiser at Anfield, in what is expected to be an emotional evening following the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in a car crash.

Last season’s champions, who sealed the title with four matches to spare, have added significant firepower with the signings of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. The attacking upgrades are complemented by the pace and width of new fullbacks Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.

With Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk still at the core of the squad, the only major question is whether Liverpool’s retooled defence can stay solid enough to secure back-to-back titles. Bournemouth, meanwhile, will be looking to build on last season’s ninth-place finish.

On Saturday, Manchester City travel to Wolverhampton as Pep Guardiola seeks to restore his side’s dominance after last season’s third-place disappointment. The absence of Rodri — who suffered a serious knee injury last year — was a major factor in City’s struggles.

The Ballon d’Or winner has returned to training, but Guardiola admitted he will not be “really, really fit” until after the September international break. City finished 13 points behind Liverpool last season, while Wolves ended in 16th place.

Sunday’s headline clash sees perennial runners-up Arsenal visit Old Trafford to face Manchester United in a battle of two revamped squads.

The Gunners, desperate to break their second-place streak, have bolstered their midfield with Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, while Viktor Gyökeres arrives to address their long-standing striker problem. Arsenal’s elite defence will face a tough test against United’s new-look front three of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.

United, who finished a disappointing 15th last season, are now under new manager Ruben Amorim and in the midst of a full rebuild. While expectations for a top-four finish are high, patience may be thin. The big question is whether Amorim can quickly mould his squad into a competitive force or if fans will endure another season of transition.

The weekend also offers a first taste of Premier League football for the three newly promoted clubs. Sunderland host West Ham United, Burnley travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, and Leeds United welcome Everton on Monday.
