The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of electoral materials for the 2024 governorship election in Benin, Edo State.

In preparation for the elections, INEC has issued strict warnings to political parties, candidates, and their supporters regarding conduct at polling units on Election Day.

In an official statement, INEC reminded parties that campaigns must cease at midnight on Thursday, September 19, as per the provisions of the Electoral Act 2023. Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, emphasized that any rallies, processions, or public campaigns after the campaign deadline will be considered illegal.

“The Commission wishes to remind political parties that in line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, and item 12 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2024 Edo State Governorship election, all campaigns by political parties must end at midnight today, Thursday, 19th September 2024,” the statement read.

Olumekun also warned that on Election Day, scheduled for Saturday, September 21, political parties and their supporters are strictly prohibited from appearing at polling units in campaign attire or carrying any campaign materials.

“It is illegal for any political party to engage in rallies, processions, or media campaigns from midnight today. These prohibitions, including sanctions, are outlined in Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2022,” Olumekun added.

INEC urged all parties and their supporters to comply with the laws governing the electoral process to ensure a peaceful and fair election.
