The Lagos State government has announced a significant increase in boarding fees for all public secondary schools, effective from the 2024/2025 academic session.

The new fee structure raises the cost from N35,000 to N100,000 per term.

The announcement was made in a letter addressed to all boarding school principals and signed by Olufemi Asaolu, Director of Basic Education Services at the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

The letter, titled “Review of Boarding Fees in All Public Secondary Schools in Lagos State for 2024/2025 Session,” was issued on behalf of the state Commissioner for Education.

The directive emphasizes the state’s decision to standardize the fee structure across all public secondary schools.

Asaolu’s letter specifies that the increased fee should cover all boarding-related costs, with no additional charges permitted.

“I am further directed to inform you that no additional fee of any form should be collected by the schools,” the letter stated.

The resumption date for the new academic year remains unchanged, with students expected to return on September 15, 2024.

The fee hike represents a substantial financial adjustment for families, nearly tripling the previous cost.

As of now, the state government has not provided further details on the reasons behind the fee increase or whether there will be any financial assistance available to families facing difficulties.
