The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Samsideen Oladiti, a 55-year-old senior official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), widely known as “Shamelon,” following allegations of murder and assault, the police confirmed on Saturday.
Deputy police spokesperson Babaseyi Oluseyi, in a statement on X, disclosed that Oladiti is accused of two violent incidents on Lagos Island: one in late August that resulted in a man’s death, and another on September 17 in which a dispatch rider suffered serious injuries.
“On 17th September 2025 at about 3:00pm, the suspect allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, using a helmet and fists to inflict serious bodily injury. The victim was rushed to hospital, placed on oxygen, and is currently receiving medical treatment,” Oluseyi said.
Regarding the fatal case, Oluseyi explained:
“During the altercation, the suspect allegedly used a metallic ring to repeatedly strike a man on the head and face, inflicting severe injuries. Despite medical intervention, the victim was confirmed dead on 17th September 2025. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.”
Oladiti has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Panti-Yaba for further investigation.
The arrest followed protests by sympathisers of the slain man at Oladiti’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island. Demonstrators set two of Oladiti’s motorcycles ablaze before order was restored. Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh personally led operatives—from mobile, tactical, and conventional units—to quell the unrest and prevent further escalation.
State NURTW Chairman Mustapha Adekunle (alias “Sego”) has since distanced the union from Oladiti’s actions. He affirmed:
“The NURTW does not condone violence or any unlawful activity.”
He also appealed for a thorough and impartial investigation and stated that “once the legal process is complete, he will also face the union’s internal disciplinary procedures. Loyalty or closeness to me will not shield anyone from consequences.”
Oluseyi called on Lagos residents to remain calm, assuring that the police will pursue justice diligently in all cases connected with Oladiti.
