The Labour Party (LP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its former presidential candidate, Peter Gregory Obi, demanding that he formally resign his membership of the party following his involvement with a newly formed political coalition.
In a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, the party distanced itself from the coalition, describing its members as self-serving politicians bent on reclaiming power at all costs.
National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, said:
“We are not part of the so-called coalition. The Labour Party remains focused on building a truly people-centered alternative, not a platform for desperate politicians seeking to relaunch themselves into the corridors of power.”
He accused Obi of holding secret meetings with some LP members to convince them to defect, but noted that many had declined the invitation.
“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him,” Ifoh stated.
The party warned that any of its members who have aligned themselves with the coalition must tender their resignation within 48 hours.
“The Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda or deceptive persona—those who claim to be with us by day and with the coalition by night,” the statement added.
LP expressed concern that the idea of a “New Nigeria” being championed by the coalition is misleading and unrealistic given the composition of its membership.
“Those behind the coalition are the same politicians who have mismanaged Nigeria for years. They are recycled, frustrated, and desperate. Desperate politicians cannot birth a New Nigeria,” Ifoh said.
He stressed that nearly 70% of Nigeria’s population are young people yearning for genuine change—not a return to old political patterns.
“The New Nigeria our youths are dreaming of cannot emerge from this coalition of power mongers. It can only be realized through the Labour Party,” he emphasized.
The party urged its members to stay committed and maintain the party’s structure as preparations begin for future elections.
