The Kano State Joint Security Taskforce Committee, arrested 28 individuals suspected of planning to engage in thuggery during the holy month of Ramadan.

This was confirmed in a statement issued to the press on Thursday by Ibrahim Waiya, the committee’s Public Relations Officer and the state’s Commissioner for Information.

The statement outlined that, between March 3 and March 13, 2025, joint security operations carried out by the Kano State Government Task Force Committee on Peace Restoration and Youth Rehabilitation led to the arrest of the 28 suspects, commonly known as “Yan Daba”, and the seizure of dangerous weapons and illicit drugs.

“Between March 3rd and 13th 2025, joint security operations conducted by the Kano State Government Task Force Committee on Peace Restoration and Youth Rehabilitation resulted in the arrest of 28 suspected thugs (Yan Daba) and the recovery of dangerous weapons and illicit drugs,” the statement read.

The operations took place in strategic locations across Kano Metropolis, following intelligence reports that indicated preparations for thuggery-related activities during Ramadan.

“The Joint Security Operations of Kano State Task Force Committee, comprising Police, DSS, NDLEA, NSCDC, Correctional Services, and Vigilante groups, arrested 28 suspected thugs and recovered several items in Kano metropolis,” the statement added.

Among the items seized were 283 parcels and 14 wraps of dried leaves believed to be Cannabis Sativa, a cutlass, three scissors, a pointed iron, two bottles of “suck and die,” 13 packets of knockouts, and one rubber solution.

The commissioner confirmed that the suspects have been charged before Chief Magistrate Court Number 12 at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport for prosecution.

To further ensure a peaceful Ramadan, the Task Force Committee reiterated the Kano State Government’s ban on traditional performances known as “Tashe,” which often involve thuggery-related activities.

The use of knockouts or bangers is also prohibited, with violators to face legal consequences.

“The use of knockouts or bangers is prohibited, and violators will be dealt with according to the law,” the statement warned.

The Chairman of the committee, Yusuf Kofarmata, commended the officers involved in the operation and called on law-abiding citizens to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure a safer, more secure Kano.
