The Federal Government has officially fixed 16 years as the minimum age requirement for admission into tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
This was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the 2025 Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), held on Tuesday in Abuja.
Declaring the meeting open, Alausa stated that the age requirement is now an official and non-negotiable benchmark for admissions.
“Any admission carried out outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) will be considered illegal,” the minister warned.
He further cautioned that heads of institutions who engage in admission malpractice or attempt to bypass the CAPS framework would be prosecuted in line with existing laws.
The JAMB Policy Meeting is held annually to establish unified guidelines for the admission process into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education for the upcoming academic session.
