Former senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, has announced her withdrawal from the 2027 Ogun State governorship race following the emergence of Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obasanjo disclosed her decision in a statement after the party’s leadership adopted Adeola as its preferred candidate, a move aimed at fostering unity ahead of the election. Congratulating the APC flagbearer, she said, “I congratulate him and wish him every success. I also thank the state and national leaders of our great party for the opportunity to participate in the nomination process.”
Explaining her decision to step down, Obasanjo added, “Based on these developments, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial aspiration.” She also expressed appreciation to her supporters across the state, acknowledging their loyalty throughout her campaign.“To my supporters across Ogun State, I am deeply grateful for your calm, steadfast support and unwavering trust throughout this journey.
Together, we move forward with patience, strength and hope,” she said. Her withdrawal follows a strategic meeting of party stakeholders in Abeokuta, where Adeola was endorsed as the consensus governorship candidate, with leaders urging aspirants to rally behind him in the interest of party cohesion.
The development is seen as part of efforts by the APC to present a united front ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
