Former President Goodluck Jonathan has emphasized the importance of strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions to promote good governance and national prosperity. In a statement marking the country’s 64th Independence Day, Jonathan noted that the future of Nigeria relies on the integrity of its institutions and a democratic culture that fosters transparency, equity, and inclusion.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s progress since independence in 1960, Jonathan praised the 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in the Fourth Republic, beginning in 1999. However, he highlighted that the country’s current challenges—such as insecurity, economic instability, and social divisions—require stronger institutions and a commitment to democratic principles.
“For us to deepen the roots of our democracy and foster inclusive economic growth, we must strengthen our institutions,” Jonathan stated. He stressed that electoral integrity and robust governance systems that prioritize justice and equity are critical for Nigeria’s development.
Jonathan concluded by urging Nigerians to remain optimistic and united, calling for harnessing the nation’s youth, diversity, and resources to achieve lasting prosperity.
