Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the September 21, 2024 Edo State governorship election, stated that the people of Edo will be the ones to decide their next governor. Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Ighodalo emphasized that the decision is for the citizens, not party heavyweights like former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.
Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, previously stated that he would not support Ighodalo, citing past grievances. However, Ighodalo responded, saying that while Wike is free to change his mind, the ultimate decision rests with the people of Edo State.
With over 2.6 million registered voters, the race is heating up, featuring Ighodalo for PDP, Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP). The election follows a politically tense period, with 95 incidents of violence reported since January 2024, and it is expected to be closely contested.
