Gravenberch Returns as Liverpool Gear Up for Tough Newcastle Test

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch is set to make his first competitive appearance of the season when the Reds face Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Monday night.

The Dutch international missed the opening weekend’s 4-2 victory over AFC Bournemouth due to suspension, having also been absent from the Community Shield clash with Crystal Palace following the birth of his child.

His return provides a major boost for Arne Slot’s side, particularly in the defensive-midfield role he made his own during last season’s title-winning campaign, starting 37 of 38 Premier League fixtures.

Liverpool managed without him on opening night, with Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah scoring late goals to seal victory at Anfield, but Slot has emphasised the importance of restoring balance in midfield to avoid vulnerability on the counter-attack. Gravenberch’s availability is seen as a key step toward achieving that solidity.

The 23-year-old has been back in full training at the AXA Training Centre and is eager to contribute against a Newcastle side that finished fifth last season and will compete in the Champions League this term.

He is well aware of the challenge ahead, recalling the 3-3 draw at St. James’ Park last season when Fabian Schär struck a late equaliser for the Magpies.

Liverpool’s midfield will also feature new arrivals still adapting to English football. Gravenberch acknowledged that while time is limited for integration, the new signings are settling in well and will add quality as the season progresses.

Newcastle, known for their physical approach and strength in set-pieces, are expected to test Liverpool’s resilience.

The Reds, however, enter the clash confident and prepared, determined to maintain momentum as they pursue back-to-back league titles.
