The Republic of Niger officially marked the commencement of a five-year transitional government on Wednesday under the leadership of General Abdourahmane Tiani.
As part of the inauguration ceremony, Tiani was promoted from the rank of Brigadier General to a full five-star General.
He was also formally declared the Head of State and Supreme Commander of the country’s armed forces.
Shortly after the ceremony, General Tiani signed several legal decrees, including the dissolution of all political parties—more than 170 in total.
Additionally, he ordered the release of several political and civilian detainees who had been held for extended periods under various circumstances.
These decisions align with recommendations made during a national dialogue conference held from February 15 to 20, 2025, where stakeholders discussed the country’s political future.
With this transition, General Tiani officially embarks on a five-year leadership term starting from March 26, following 19 months in power since he first assumed control.
