The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday distributed N50 million to 250 elderly citizens in Nasarawa State under the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme.

The beneficiaries, comprising vulnerable women and men aged 65 years and above, were drawn from the 13 local government areas of the state.

The event, held in Lafia, the state capital, marked the second phase of the nationwide welfare programme aimed at alleviating the economic challenges faced by senior citizens.

The initiative, which targets all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has earmarked a total of N1.9 billion for distribution across the country.

Representing the First Lady at the event, Aisha Rufai-Ibrahim, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, explained that the scheme had increased its individual grants from N100,000 to N200,000 to provide additional support during the festive season.

Veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association were also included among the beneficiaries.

In addition to the cash support, the First Lady announced plans to launch free medical care for elderly citizens nationwide.

This initiative aims to enhance the health and well-being of senior citizens.

The First Lady expressed appreciation to Nasarawa State First Lady Salifat Abdullahi-Sule and other state First Ladies for their dedication to improving the lives of their people.

She urged the beneficiaries to prioritize their health, maintain a balanced diet, stay hydrated, exercise regularly, and spend quality time with loved ones.

During the symbolic presentation of cash and wrappers to the beneficiaries, Salifat Abdullahi-Sule applauded the First Lady’s efforts in supporting vulnerable groups. She encouraged the beneficiaries to use the grants and items wisely to maximize the impact of the initiative.

The event highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of senior citizens and fostering social welfare across the country.
