FG Declares May 1 Public Holiday for Workers’ Day

The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s International Workers’ Day.The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government, extending congratulations to workers across the country.

In a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the minister praised Nigerian workers for their dedication and contributions to national development.“The Federal Government has declared Friday, 1st May 2026, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s International Workers Day,” the statement read.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted the critical role of workers in driving the nation’s growth and prosperity, urging them to continue to uphold the values of patriotism, productivity, and commitment to duty. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and ensuring a conducive environment for economic progress.While wishing

Nigerians a successful celebration, the minister called on citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding, encouraging reflection on unity and diligence in nation-building. The May Day observance is marked annually on May 1 to recognise the contributions of workers and promote labour rights worldwide.
